Team & Tech Stack

Team

  • 2 Ruby on Rails Developers
  • 1 Project Manager

Technology Stack

  • Backend: Ruby on Rails 8, SolidQueue, Custom TCP Server & SMS Gateway
  • Frontend: Hotwire, Stimulus
  • Database: PostgreSQL, TimescaleDB

Context

The client is a leading USA provider of industrial and environmental monitoring instrumentation, delivering advanced measurement and control systems for critical infrastructure. The company specializes in technologies for air quality, meteorology, hydrology, renewable energy, and structural health monitoring, capturing and analyzing real-time environmental data with mission-critical precision.

Objective

The primary goal for Rensai Labs was to build an enterprise-grade, centralized meteorological data collection platform to automate the ingestion, storage, visualization, and archiving of telemetry from distributed weather stations.

Methodology

The project followed an Agile development methodology, ensuring continuous iteration and close collaboration between the engineering team and client stakeholders throughout the entire product lifecycle.

Challenge

The client faced a combination of operational and technical hurdles.

Heavy reliance on manual data entry and fragmented collection methods across isolated weather stations.

Core Tasks

  • Eliminate human error in sensor data ingestion
  • Deliver intuitive real-time dashboards and historical trend visualization
  • Automate maintenance activity tracking and health status monitoring
  • Securely archive time-series data while ensuring rapid retrieval

Are these issues slowing down your operations?

Solution

Over a 6-month timeline, Rensai Labs built and deployed a centralized meteorological monitoring platform, streamlining weather station infrastructure management across the USA.

To handle data from remote units, we implemented a custom TCP server with an SMS fallback, guaranteeing reliable transmission despite weak local networks.

The application uses Rails 8 with Hotwire and Stimulus for dynamic, real-time UI updates without the overhead of a dedicated frontend framework. SolidQueue manages measurement queues and automated SMS maintenance alerts. On the backend, TimescaleDB on PostgreSQL powers high-volume time-series storage, real-time analytics, and clean API endpoints for external integrations, all monitored via an interactive live map with role-based access control.

Guarantees reliable data transmission from remote stations despite local network instability.

Step 1

An interactive map displaying real-time station metrics for immediate operational visibility.

Step 2

Centralized equipment and user management secured by granular, role-based access controls.

Step 3

A multi-level SMS notification engine that triggers automated alerts to streamline field maintenance.

Step 4

Results

  • 70%+ reduction in manual data corrections — automated data pipelines increased overall data completeness to over 98%
  • 30–40% less downtime — centralized inventory and ticketing streamlined proactive asset maintenance
  • 60–70% faster reporting — automated dashboards and analytics gave stakeholders immediate access to operational and environmental insights
